How Are Dental Bridges Made?
A dental bridge is a prosthetic used to replace one or more missing teeth. It is anchored either by natural teeth on both sides of the gap or by dental implants.
To prepare for a traditional bridge, your dentist will reshape the adjacent teeth (called abutment teeth) by removing a small amount of enamel. This ensures that the bridge fits properly and functions naturally.
Next, a precise impression of your teeth is taken. This is either sent to a dental lab or used to create your custom bridge in-house. While the final bridge is being made, your dentist will place a temporary bridge or crowns to protect the prepared teeth.
Once your permanent bridge is ready, it will be adjusted for fit and cemented securely in place.
How Long Do Crowns and Bridges Last?
With proper care, dental crowns and bridges can last 10 to 15 years or more. However, they can become loose or dislodged over time due to:
• Chewing hard foods (like ice, nuts, or hard candy)
• Tooth decay or gum disease around the supporting teeth
• Trauma or wear from grinding or clenching
How to Maintain Crowns and Bridges
To ensure longevity and avoid complications, follow these oral care practices:
• Brush twice a day with fluoride toothpaste
• Floss or use interdental brushes/water flossers daily to clean between teeth and under the bridge
• Use antimicrobial mouthwash to reduce bacteria and maintain gum health
• Consider a tongue scraper for fresher breath
• Avoid chewing on very hard foods or objects
• Visit your dentist regularly for cleanings and check-ups
